Meet the Speakers

  • Catherine Jones

    Highly experienced Senior Paediatric Dietitian with over two decades of clinical practice in leading tertiary hospitals across Perth and London. Her passion for paediatric nutrition shines through in her dedication to helping families rediscover the joy of eating together and fostering healthy relationships with food.

    Throughout her career, Catherine has built extensive expertise across a broad range of medical specialties, including Gastroenterology, Neurology with a focus on the Ketogenic diet, Immunology, Infant feeding and feeding difficulties, Faltering growth, Burns, Paediatric Intensive Care, Cardiology, Inborn Errors of Metabolism, Respiratory conditions including Cystic Fibrosis and Type 1 Diabetes (T1DM). In the past five years, Catherine has developed a special interest in paediatric obesity management. She is an active member of ANZPON, contributing to professional collaboration and advancement in the field. Currently, Catherine leads as the Senior Dietitian in the Healthy Weight Service at Perth Children’s Hospital, where she promotes innovative service development and delivers comprehensive care to children and families across Western Australia.

  • Alicia Grunseit

    Alicia Grunseit is the Senior Weight Management Dietitian and Deputy Head of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney. Alicia has over 20 years experience in Paediatric Dietetics and has been instrumental is setting up the current pathway for children and adolescents with severe obesity. Alicia specialises in novel dietary strategies for children and adolescents with obesity. She is an active member of ANZPON and a stakeholder of the EDIT collaboration. Alicia has co-authored several publications on child and adolescent obesity and is considered a clinical expert in the area.

    Alicia loves food – which is why she became a dietitian and loves spending her spare time baking with her two children (and then trying to only let them eat the baked goods in moderation!)

  • A/Prof Rae-Chi Huang

    A/Prof Huang (MBBS, FRACP, PhD, DCH) is a paediatric physician and clinical researcher in early antecedents of cardiometabolic disease. Her work investigates pathogenesis of cardiovascular and related metabolic disease, with emphasis on their origins in pregnancy and early childhood. She completed her PhD in 2010, investigating the role of early life precursors on adolescent cardio-metabolic risk.

    Since 2010 she has been a paediatric consultant in the paediatric obesity clinic (Healthy Weight Service) at Perth Children’s Hospital. She holds an adjunct Associate Professorship at Edith Cowan University and is Honorary Research Fellow at The Kids Institute.

    A/Professor Huang's research focuses on understanding the early origins of human disease particularly in reference to obesity and related cardiovascular risk factors. She has had financial support in the role of chief investigator from the NHMRC amounting to over $3.5 million and led the Australian arm of the EU “Early-life stressors and LifeCycle health”.

  • Dr Jacqueline Curran

    Dr Jacqui Curran is a Paediatric Endocrinologist with a clinical and research focus on childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes. She completed her specialist training in Australia and Canada. Since 2008, she has worked at Perth Children’s Hospital, where she currently leads the Healthy Weight Service and Type 2 Diabetes Service.

    Jacqui’s work bridges clinical care and research, with interests in emerging obesity treatments, the use of technology in diabetes management, and strategies for improving access to care. Jacqui collaborates nationally and internationally, and she represents ANZSPED internationally on the European Paediatric Endocrine Society’s endocrine aspects of obesity guideline panel. In WA, she works closely with Country Health Services to support children in regional and rural areas.

    Beyond clinical care, Jacqui supports health promotion and education initiatives, including projects focused on provider training and community engagement. She advocates for personalised, evidence-based care that offers children and families informed choices in their treatment journey.
